Blue Shield of California Individual Policyholders Refund Class Action Investigation
Investigating a nationwide class action lawsuit on behalf of consumers who purchased individual health care policies from Blue Shield of California. An insurer that sells individual policies to consumers (as opposed to health coverage obtained from an employer) is required to spend at least 80% of its customers’ premiums on medical care. If the insurer does not meet this standard, it must refund the difference to its customers. In California alone, Blue Shield was required to refund $64 million to customers in 2014. However, a recent lawsuit alleges that Blue Shield of California still owes its individual policy customers approximately $35 million in rebates.
