According to the New York Times, a University of Cambridge professor collected data from about 270,000 people who installed the personality quiz app called "thisisyourdigitallife." The professor then collected data from those 270,000 people and their Facebook friends totaling 80 million people. Cambridge Analytica then acquired that data from the professor to develop techniques used to influence political elections.
